Times are hard – and dues have increased significantly. We hope you decide that the benefits of STC membership are worth the costs, given your own situation and financial priorities. To help you decide, we would like to present an overview of the following information:

What does STC provide?

What does membership cost – and are there options for making it more affordable?

How do I continue to take advantage of my STC network if I choose not to renew?

And remember, you are always welcome to call or e-mail TAC President CJ Walker to talk things through.

NEW 2009-12-23: I have added some points submitted by Rich Maggio (who also has an eloquent posting on the issue here: http://preview.tinyurl.com/yzxt5b2). See the items that start with +.

1) The “New STC” membership benefits

The collective benefits include:

STC’s work to promote the profession

international competitions

a broad infrastructure for all kinds of networking

The individual benefits include:

electronic subscriptions to all STC Publications

substantial savings on continuing education

free sponsored seminars

+ free webinars (http://www.stc.org/edu/seminars01.asp includes upcoming and past events)

learning from participating in international competitions – and perhaps winning!

access to the TechComm Body of Knowledge (TCBOK)

product discounts

resources for job-seeking (Job Seeker Boot Camp and Job Database)

+ access to the annual survey (fee: $10)

access to purchasing SIG and/or Chapter memberships (see more below)

access to purchasing subscriptions to the printed editions of two publications

opportunities to influence the STC and what it provides individually and collectively

opportunities to develop leadership skills

benefits accruing from the collective benefits!

Read more at http://www.stc.org/membership/.

2) What does membership cost – and are there options for making it more affordable?

Annual cost (2010)
Basic Membership costs $215 USD (up from $150 last year), and does not include any chapter or SIG memberships. Each chapter membership you purchase costs $25; each SIG membership costs $10.
For further details see http://www.stc.org/membership/renew-your-stc-membership.asp, where you can also learn about Gold Membership ($395) and the SIG Value Package ($375) – as well as discounts for students and retirees.

Installment plan available
STC provides a plan that enables you to pay for your membership in four monthly installments.

Membership renewal subsidies for 2010
For the 2010 membership year, STC will award renewal dues subsidies to up to 400 members affected by the economic recession. The awards will include up to 100 Full Recovery Packages (a credit of $215 for the basic membership) and up to 300 Subsidy Recovery Packages (a credit of $65).
For full details on who is eligible for these packages and how to apply, see
http://www.stc.org/2009/12/stc-offers-recovery-package-for-membership.asp.
The application deadline is 5 PM EST (GMT-5) Thursday, 31 December 2009. Candidates will be notified via email by 11 February 2010 whether or not they have been selected.

3) How do I continue to take advantage of my STC network if I choose not to renew?

Please stay in touch! A good network is especially important during hard times. We all need each other, so please keep the following in mind:

You don’t have to be a member to receive announcements or job notices.

You don’t have to be a member to participate in our virtual community http://stc-transalpine.ning.com/

You don’t have to be a member to participate in events that cost money, although you would have to pay full price when you do participate.
+ Full price for educational events is usually substantially higher than it is for members. (The fees help to pay the presenters, to cover their travel expenses, or both – thus garnering better quality content from a greater variety of presenters than would otherwise be possible.)
